Insuring a motor home is an area that can present special problems if the motor home is old. Many people have motor homes
that are over 20 years old and have modifications the owner made just on a whim that could easily compromise the safe operation
of the vehicle.
I was talking to an old friend a couple of years ago and she said she was going to take the bathroom
out of her motor home because it was too small for her and she could make it closet space. I asked about what she was going
to do about a bathroom and she said something like using bathrooms at rest stops is what she does now so there wouldn't
be any change for her. That motor home no longer qualifies for coverage because of that modification which is what I advised
her but somehow I don't think her agent knows.
Another angle where the catagory of motor home presents a problem
is the thin line between motor and mobile. Many motor homes are so expensive that a lot of insurers' limit for replacement
cost is too low. You must accept the market value guidelines. These guidelines work as a dispute buffer for personal estimates
and sentimental value.
Some insurers offer seasonal premiums for motor homes that can be parked in a stable and
safe place that are lower than coverage for the whole year.
